Strengths

Build:

Bosch’s T4B (amazon.com link) ‘Gravity-Rise’ Miter Saw Stand is built to be a workhorse. It has a very wide base which adds to stability and the whole thing weighs in at 76 lbs. You can expect this stand to last you quite awhile despite consistent usage, though I am confused by the manufacturer’s 1 Year Warranty. It took me about 40 min to assemble but it is all tightening bolts and the directions are very well done. Once it is ready to go though, this piece of equipment takes a lot of the effort out of using your miter saw and allows you to enjoy what you are doing.

This wheeled stand has two different modes, one for moving and one for making cuts which are quite easy to switch between even with one of my saws attached. It was a great idea for Bosch to add their ‘Grativity-Rise’ engineering to a miter saw stand. An explanation of how it works will not do proper justice to the way it marvels in action. Its real function is to let you lift the stand into the vertical (mobile) position without feeling the weight of the system. It also stores with a pretty small footprint in the vertical position.

Durability

Dewalt lists theirs as the DWX726 (amazon.com link) and it is pretty solid. This model is made mostly out of steal so don’t let any of the 67 lbs surprise you. It comes with a 3 year warranty so you know they made it to stick around awhile. One concern I have though, is that Dewalt makes other stands advertised as being able to handle a total load of 1000 lbs and this one is only listed with a 300 lb maximum load. It makes me wonder whether it will be able to hold up to consistent stress. I’ve had mine for awhile but I guess I still have 2 and a half more years to put it through its paces before I have to pay or do my own repair work. If I had to guess, it will be the support arms that go first because they already sag under different weights and both arms slide into the same tube. The design is still working but I fear that with age it may get harder to work them to the necessary positions.

Durability

The Dewalt DWX724 (Amazon.com link) Compact Miter Saw Stand is a work bench with a real want-to-work attitude that is going to get tons of use for years to come. Made from lightweight aluminum it weighs ‘only’ 30 lbs which is 5 pounds less than its big brother the 723 but it features a significantly smaller footprint (43” as opposed to 60”). The manufacturer promises that it can support 500 lbs and I would believe it if they said more. The only real improvement they could have made in this category is the inclusion of too much plastic. I think all metal construction is a reasonable demand given the price.

Stability

This small stand does not rock or lean. I think the fact that legs are simple- no length adjustment or wheels- adds to its solidity. My saws clamp to the brackets quickly and DWX724 stand 2securely. There is a two button mechanism to remove them: cumbersome maybe the first two tries but then it’s simple and you appreciate how strong the bond is between your saw and workstation. Everyone needs to know though, that the saw does come with the universal clamps (DW231) that aren’t pictured. I actually bought and extra set but it worked out because now that I have two sets of brackets, I can keep my most used miter saw clipped in to one set and use the other set as needed. So the extra brackets actually come in handy for me but for others, it would just be an annoying additional expense.

Durability

Dewalt is a brand you can usually trust to make long lasting items and the DWX723 Heavy Duty Miter Saw Stand (Amazon.com link) is no exception. This thing is 35 solid pounds but that almost seems light once you analyze the size and build. You can tell that the legs, the extensions, and of course the work surface itself present no danger of fragility at all. The only parts that aren’t going to stick around forever are the few plastic pieces Dewalt chose to use. Actually, I’ve only had mine for about a month and I can tell that one of the leg locks is going to break sooner rather than later. And as soon as I got it out of the box I decided it would be smarter if I broke off the plastic wing nuts that hold the support on the extension arm as well as those that are there to raise and lower the support, and replaced all of them with real washers and lock nuts to be sure everything stays together

The Lion Miter Trimmer

From where I stand, the Lion Miter Trimmer from Pootatuck Corporation makes the standard miter box obsolete. It’s accuracy is unmatched by a standard miter box plus it cuts miters, bevels, rounds, compound miters, square ends and chamfers.

The Lion Trimmer is a lever (rather than gravity) operated guillotine whose in-feed table can be adjusted from somewhere just outside of square to somewhere just inside of 45 degrees with positive stops at 45 and 90 degrees on both cutting areas. This guillotine action provides a razor-smooth cut rather than the sawn cut from a standard miter box. Part of the reason for the tool’s great accuracy is that its bed is a single massive casting, one of eight carefully machined, cast-iron pieces. It comes with honed razor-sharp knives ready to use. Its 90 and 45 degrees stops have been carefully preset at the factory. Pootatuck’s thorough instruction guides contribute to our ease in using their tools accurately, though the design is so “right” one can almost operate it intuitively.

Cleaning Saw Blades

What you will read below is a conversation that took place between me and a reader of mine via e-mail. I am publishing it here after doing some minor editing to make it more presentable for a website format.

Reader:

When circular saw blades are used to cut green lumber or particularly resinous woods, these gums and resins can accumulate on the blade surfaces. This can cause rough cutting and dull the blade more quickly because of unnecessary overheating.

A quick remedy for this condition, which can be performed easily by any woodworker, is as follows:

Dissolve common household lye in water according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Soak gummed-up blades for about 20-30 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly in clear running water, using a stiff-bristled brush to help remove the gums and resins.
