Cut Quality

The Makita XSL01Z is a precise, compact, and versatile miter saw.  The unique four steel rail sliding system was designed to ensure a higher level of precision.  Features like a large aluminum base, the electric brake, and a soft grip handle provide greater comfort and control while making cuts.

Small saw doesn’t always mean small cuts—and the XSL01Z is proof of this.  With a large dimensional lumber capacity of 2″ x 12″ at 90° and 1″ x 8-3/8″ at 45°, this 7-1/2″ miter saw can handle it’s fair share.  It’s crosscut capacity is 11-3/4″.  It’s vertical cut capacity is 2-1/16″.  But, cut capacity only matters if the cuts themselves are good.  Fortunately the XSL01Z was made with accuracy in mind.  Unfortunately, some dissatisfied reviewers have negative things to say about the XSL01Z being “underpowered”.

Ease of Use

The sheer portability of this miter saw makes it a breeze to use for a number of applications.  It weighs under 30 lbs, making it one of the lightest miter saws available today.  The fact that it’s cordless means even more portability and even less hassle.

Making miter adjustments is simple with positive miter stops at: 0, 15, 22.5, 30, and 45 degrees (left and right).  Bevel adjustments are easy as well.  Although this saw is technically a “dual bevel” miter saw, it only goes 5° to the right.

Overall Value

The convenience of portability due to the extremely lightweight design of this miter saw is attractive.  The benefits of an efficient battery-powered system is attractive as well.  The only area where the XSL01Z doesn’t score highly is it’s cutting power.  For craftsmen with multiple miter saws looking for something a bit more portable and cordless for specific projects, this might not be an issue.  For those who need an all around versatile saw for a multitude of projects, the lack of power could be a deal breaker.  After all, this is not a cheap tool.

Our Verdict

The pros of this saw outweigh the cons as long as you’re not dependent on it for every project on your list.  After all, it’s a 7-1/2″ miter saw so most woodworkers will need something larger in the tool shed regardless.  The industry-leading battery technology is exciting in itself and Makita is well-known for making great power tools.
